DOWNTOWN GOES PINK FOR
LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS
“Downtown Goes Pink” brings attention to the YWCA
Women’s Health Program screening services to
assist with raising funds for their program to
provide breast cancer screenings. The service is
offered to women in Marion and Polk counties. The
YWCA Salem encourages the early detection of breast
cancer through its resource library, two breast
cancer support groups and assistance with early
detection exams. In 2010, the YWCA Salem Women's
Health Program provided 411 mammograms to local
women. We are excited to be a part of First
Wednesday on October 5, 2011 to share our upcoming
volunteer training information and help you discover
your pink during breast cancer awareness month.

The
Linda L. Vladyka Breast Wellness Foundation, is
a local non-profit dedicated to funding breast
health education, screening and support services in
our community. Our signature event is the Play for a
Cure© softball tournament held at Wallace
Marine Park every August. Play for a Cure©
has been named the largest slow pitch softball
tournament in Oregon with 40 teams participating to
“strike out” breast cancer. The event is not only a
competitive tournament, but an opportunity to raise
breast cancer awareness and funds to support local
programs.
Four
years ago we introduced 10 "Pink Messengers" during
the softball tournament to provide breast health
facts and educational messages. These are life size
silhouettes that are painted pink and hold a written
message. Each year they can be sponsored in honor or
memory of someone who has battled breast cancer. The
Pink Messengers are frequently invited to attend
various cancer awareness events throughout the year.
They have become so popular, that this year, 10 more
Pink Messengers were added. Pink Messenger
sponsorships for 2012 are still available for $50.
We are
also reaching out to the community through our
cookbook, Pink Ribbon Recipes to “Strike
Out” Breast Cancer. This is a collection of
recipes by friends and supporters of the Linda L.
Vladyka Breast Wellness Foundation. Many of the
recipes share special stories or memories and have
been dedicated to someone that has battled breast
cancer. Information, fun facts and photos from Play
for a Cure© are also included. Cookbooks
are available to purchase for $10.
